Rome Art Program

Summer 2011 - Two Sessions

ENROLL NOW - SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Courses are offered in 2, 4, 6, and 8 week segments

Launched in 2009, the Rome Art Program is designed to inspire participants to expand their artistic vision through painting and drawing on the streets of Rome and Florence - expanding on the plein-air tradition of generations of artists.

The Program is directed by Carole Robb, Head of Atelier (Painting) at the New York Studio School, a winner of the 1980 Rome Prize in Painting, a Fulbright Scholar, and member of the National Academy. Ms. Robb has worked and exhibited in Rome, London, and New York. She will be teaching plein-air painting in this program.

The Program’s ideology is based on the compelling impact that firsthand observation and perception have on drawing and painting. Participants will work on location - taking their inspiration from the evocative ruins, churches, Renaissance palaces, gardens, and Natural scenery that constitute the Italian landscape. Critiques and lectures will lend insight and prompt a deeper knowledge of each participant’s artistic journey. Guiding participant through important sites, distinguished art historians will illuminate the significance of historical places and periods.

ROME

June 1 - July 13, 2011

In the artistic Mecca of Rome, participants will become part of the fabric of the city as they paint and draw directly from millennia-old landmarks, in gardens, piazzas, streets of lesser-known areas, and museums. The curriculum will be complemented by art historian led field trips, receptions at the American and British Academies, and trips to the city’s diverse contemporary art galleries.

FLORENCE

July 15 - 29, 2011

In Florence the program is affiliated with SACI art school at the Palazzo dei Cartelloni. The scale and richness of Florence’s architecture, streetscapes and gardens are magnificent, making it an exhilarating experience to paint and draw firsthand. The treasures of the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace will be explored and a renowned art historian will lead students on field trips. The Florence session includes a visit to the glorious city of Venice.

Traditional Oil Painting with a Limited Palette with Charles Philip Brooks

Using a limited palette of oil colors (yellow ochre, mars. ivory, or chromatic black, titanium white, naples yellow, ultramarine blue, and venetian red), students will study form, light, composition, and harmonious arrangement by making copies from masterworks. Students may bring materials to copy from or choose from the artist’s collection of reproductions.

About the Artist: Charles Philip Brooks, one of the most highly-regarded contemporary Tonalist painters, studied in New England in the studio of highly respected Boston School authority, Paul Ingbretson and with the renowned American Barbizon painter, Dennis Sheehan. He is primarily a landscape painter, focusing on the landscape of the southeastern United States. His work incorporates elements of impressionism and is firmly rooted in the American Barbizon/Tonalist tradition of landscape painting. He works out of the tradition established by such artists as George Inness, Alexander Wyant, Bruce Crane, John Frances Murphy, Dwight William Tyron, and North Carolina’s own Elliott Daingerfield. Further influences include the painters Eugene Boudin and Charles-Francois Daubigny, as well as many other painters of the French Barbizon School. Mr. Brooks is currently Artist-in-Residence for the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences in Rocky Mount, North Carolina where he leads the atelier-style Imperial Centre School of Painting and teaches a select group of painting students working with 19th century techniques.

Sign up now to work with American Tonalist painter, Charles Philip Brooks the weekend of January 22 and 23, 2011, when he will share his expertise and guide the group through a weekend of painting. Caroline Homes Nuckolls Painting Workshop

Mentone Area Arts Council

Join Caroline Nuckolls for a two-day workshop to learn how to paint in the Impressionist style with primary colors.  You can mix any color from them.  Impressionism is exciting because of the action of warm against the cool color.  Learn about good mixers which make both warm and cool secondary and tertiary colors.

The workshop will be held at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Mentone, Alabama on Friday, September 24, and Saturday, September 25, 2010.  The workshop is restricted to ten participants so make your plans today to attend.

About Caroline:  Caroline Nuckolls is a native of Bramwell, West Virginia, and currently resides in Marietta, Georgia.  She studied art at Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia.  In 2001, Caroline arranged for a private painting lesson in Monet’s Garden in Giverny, France, with Gale Bennett, Founding Director of ArtStudy-Giverny.  She later became an assistant to Mr. Bennett and upon Mr. Bennett’s death,  became resident Manager of ArtStudy-Giverny.  She has the honor of carrying his legacy of teaching Gale Bennett’s “Oberservation with Imagination” method of Impressionism that emphasizes oberservation and creativity, utilizing warm and cool colors, and brush stroke and compsoition techniques developed during the Impressionist movement.  Caroline’s paintings are in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, Germany and France.  Caroline is represented by Letoliacha Gallery, 69 rue Claude Monet in Givery, France.

Fee:  Workshop fee is $125 which includes all instruction and critique, Friday and Saturday morning coffee and pastries, and bottled water.  $50 is due with registration with the remainder due prior tothe beginning of the workshop.  If you prefer, early bird registration prior to September 3, 2010, is $110 payable in full with registration.

Supply List:  Participants should have the following supplies:

PAINT: Caroline uses acrylics and teach color mixing from primaries. The brand that I use is Liquitex, which has an easy-open lid and good, consistent color. I do not use water or mixing mediums with my paint.

Cadmium Yellow Light (Make sure it is light, cadmium yellow medium is orange. Do not get “hue”.)

Hansa Yellow

Phthlocyanine Blue (phthlo blue, green shade)

Ultramarine Blue (red shade)

Quinacridone Magenta

Naphthol Crimson

Titanium White

BRUSHES: Hog bristlle “filbert” brushes, recommend #8 and #12 - I do have some brushes to loan

WATER: Water bottle to store water and a container to use to clean brushes. Recycled plastic containers work great!

EASELS: Portable and easy to carry work best. See art supply resources below. I will have a limited number to loan, first come-first served.
