King George's Quarter Horse

King George’s Quarter Horse 36” x 48”

King George was one of the very best friends a young man could have had growing up.  That young man was me.  George was like a second dad and that is saying a lot as me and my dad are very close.  I have no doubt that he would’ve given his life for me or given me money if I were in a crisis.  I was always at his house hanging out with his son or his son was at my home.  He treated me better than family.

He taught me about hunting, fishing and living life to the fullest.

He always had my back.

He welcomed me every time I went to his house.

He taught me about working even when you don’t want to and going the extra mile.

He constantly encouraged me and inspired me with his praise of everything that I did.

He gave me a lecture once about others feelings.

He called me Boyd Rodriquez.

He suffered agonizingly at times when shrapnel from a Vietnam War wound worked its way out of his face.

He helped me roof my home.

He visited the sick.

He gave a hand whenever I needed one without my asking.

I remember a lot of great things about George, too numerous to mention, and that is why he is King George and why I painted this horse.

Don’t forget to signup for the Boyd Greene Fine Art Newsletter as it is about to go out and it will have some neat benefits for those that signup.  Don’t miss out!

Thank you for stopping by for a browse and I hope you know someone like George.  Give them a big thank you this weekend.

Cumberland Island Wild Horse Graphite Pencil Drawing

Thank you for taking the time to stop by Boyd Greene Fine Art for a browse. Here is my newest piece of art inspired by one of the wild horses of Cumberland Island in South Georgia. It is a barrier island of Georgia where the crumbling ruins of a Carnegie mansion test the fate of time.

Cumberland Island is a protected National Seashore that is the scenic wildlife habitat of armadillos, deer, wild turkeys, marsh rabbits, alligators, bob cats, raccoons, threatened and endangered shore birds such as American Oystercatchers, Least Terns, Wilson’s Plovers, wood storks, piping plovers, gopher tortoises, manatees, sea turtles, lizards, and of course feral horses. Cumberland Island measures about 18 miles long by 3 miles wide and is the largest wilderness island in the United States of America.

I’ve done my best to convey the intense heat this wild horse deals with during the torrid summers on the island. It quickly passed from the shade of small trees bordering a large field over the windswept sand dunes the island is famous for to the cover of more trees and back to grazing.

Cumberland Island’s feral horses roam the island freely subsisting on the island’s natural bounty such as marsh grasses and sea oats (a third of Cumberland is salt marsh).

The wild horses being originally Spanish descent have been bred with mustangs to make them more hardy and tolerant of the harsh conditions that they exist in.

The horses have to make the most of what nature supplies as their diet can be low in nutrition.

I was so fascinated watching these wild horses and cannot wait to go back again.

Cumberland Island definitely should be on everyone’s bucket list! So, here are some interesting links with information about things to see on Cumberland Island:

The Two Friends Pen and Ink Rose Drawing

The Two Friends are roses once again from my mother’s flowerbeds. I thought their shapes were very beautiful even though they had started to get spots from aging. Therefore, I decided to render them in pen and ink.

Drawing is a lot of fun for me as it allows me to experiment with different textures and techniques that could be beneficial to me in some painting. That is why my drawings are so diverse and exploratory.

In addition, I love black and white photography such as Clyde Butcher’s and this draws me to pen and ink renderings as well. I believe that there is great beauty in simplicity.

I think these two roses typify true friendship where one or the other is content to let the other have their day in the limelight even if the light is not on them. Both have their beauties and we need each of their qualities at times. It would be a better world if we all could be content to let those about us shine when we are in the shadow of their light.

Thank you for your time and for your interest.
