ENROLL NOW - SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
Courses are offered in 2, 4, 6, and 8 week segments
Launched in 2009, the Rome Art Program is designed to inspire participants to expand their artistic vision through painting and drawing on the streets of Rome and Florence - expanding on the plein-air tradition of generations of artists.
The Program is directed by Carole Robb, Head of Atelier (Painting) at the New York Studio School, a winner of the 1980 Rome Prize in Painting, a Fulbright Scholar, and member of the National Academy. Ms. Robb has worked and exhibited in Rome, London, and New York. She will be teaching plein-air painting in this program.
The Program’s ideology is based on the compelling impact that firsthand observation and perception have on drawing and painting. Participants will work on location - taking their inspiration from the evocative ruins, churches, Renaissance palaces, gardens, and Natural scenery that constitute the Italian landscape. Critiques and lectures will lend insight and prompt a deeper knowledge of each participant’s artistic journey. Guiding participant through important sites, distinguished art historians will illuminate the significance of historical places and periods.
ROME
June 1 - July 13, 2011
In the artistic Mecca of Rome, participants will become part of the fabric of the city as they paint and draw directly from millennia-old landmarks, in gardens, piazzas, streets of lesser-known areas, and museums. The curriculum will be complemented by art historian led field trips, receptions at the American and British Academies, and trips to the city’s diverse contemporary art galleries.
FLORENCE
July 15 - 29, 2011
In Florence the program is affiliated with SACI art school at the Palazzo dei Cartelloni. The scale and richness of Florence’s architecture, streetscapes and gardens are magnificent, making it an exhilarating experience to paint and draw firsthand. The treasures of the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace will be explored and a renowned art historian will lead students on field trips. The Florence session includes a visit to the glorious city of Venice.
