Contemplative Canna Lily Oil Painting
Friday, August 8, 2008 at 5:05PM Contemplative Canna Lily is a floral oil painting recently finished that was inspired by a lily in one of my mother’s flower beds. The reference photo was taken right after a light rain fell on the landscape that delicately dampened the Canna Lily with rain droplets.
I have a deep rooted desire to paint fine art paintings that have a strong sense of place. Often I’m contemplative after a rain storm and this painting sets my mind to searching for the story that is built into the painting. What story lies hidden within for you?
Gardeners love Canna Lilies for their emerald greens, coppers, burgundies, and even lemony lime stripe foliage. The leaves are ovoid, thick and dense. Out of the foliage rise stalks of vibrant Iris-like flowers in tropical shades of pink, salmon, yellow, and crimson.
Considering the size of the painting I decided not to include the rain droplets due to the textured paint technique I used. Yet you can still feel the quietness that seems to reign over flower beds after a summer shower.
Canna lilies are definitely flowers that cause their beholder to marvel in amazement at their grand beauty.
