Sunflower Graphite Pencil Drawing
Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 6:06PM Teddy Roosevelt once said, “The man who works, the man who does great deeds, in the end dies as surely as the veriest idler who cumbers the earth’s surface; but he leaves behind him the great fact that he has done his work well.”

This is the second sunflower creation from a garden of sunflowers I grew in the summer of 2005. The leaf was drawn to lead the viewer back into the graphite sketch to the stalk which leads you up to beautiful sunflower petals that have so much character. I was careful not to put so much detail in the leaf that it would obstruct the flow of your vision. I made the stalk at the bottom in partial shadow to restrict your eye from leaving there and to bounce it back up to the main subject. There is a lot of action in a subject that is so still. You know that before long the petals are going to be bursting open to reveal seeds which will satisfy many birds in the near future. The flower seems to reach out to you. It is as though a story is being revealed to you of how it has grown to be such an elegant southern lady.
I made a whole slew of edges in this painting; hard edges, soft edges and blended edges that keep your eye moving around the art work. It was a lot of fun to draw and as always with my renderings a little bit of an experiment to see if I could push the envelope a little farther.
I hope you will enjoy this beautiful flower and if you have any inquiries, please let me know by calling (423) 505-0805. All of my art is always registered with the Fine Art Registry before leaving for your protection and satisfaction. Thank you for your interest and your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
